My name is Joshua Berkov and I am currently a Master's student in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I was born in Los Angeles on March 5th, 1982, and have since lived in every major region of the United States. In 2004, I received my B.A. in Ethics and Political Philosophy from Brown University and am now completing my Master's degree in Library Science.

For my final project for Internet Applications, I have conducted a study of aspects of web design and usability with regard to the abilities and capabilities of elderly internet users. It is well known that, as we age, our physical and mental abilities begin to diminish. Our eye sight begins to deteriorate; our reflexes begin to slow; and our ability to learn and remember how to complete new and unfamiliar tasks may also begin to weaken. This project shows how web developers can design websites that are both accessible to elderly users and attractive to all users. This project also explores other approaches, such as hardware-based approaches, that have been proposed as means of helping those who have these impairments to use the internet.
